As Rare and Unique as a Miracle

Finding Support on a Lonely Road

“It’s been nothing but a true blessing.”

Madelyn has been to some of the top-tier medical centers in the country and undergone some of the most rigorous genetic testing in the world in search of a diagnoses. Officially, she has an “undiagnosed neurological condition with severe delays and degenerative scoliosis.” She is the only person in the world with her unique condition: one in 8 billion.

We sat down with Madelyn’s father to discuss their experience. After 5 years of riding at Miracles, Madelyn’s father says not only can they see incredible physical and cognitive changes — improved core muscle strength and coordination, social and verbal developments, new language — they can see Madelyn’s relationship with her therapy horse, Don Pecos, developing too. Riding gives her freedom and allows her to experience things just like other kids.

“It gives her joy and she brings that joy home.”

He says it’s the best hour of her week and her favorite activity, and the support they receive at Miracles has changed things for their family, too.

“Don’t feel alone. In this world, it can feel lonely, especially when you’re a parent of an undiagnosed child or a child with any diagnoses. There are people at Miracles who love and only want the best for the success and growth of those with disabilities.”

Miracles in Motion, in his terms, is a place where kids like Madelyn can just be kids. When asked what message he’d like to share with Miracles’ community, he said:

“It’s hard [for families like ours]. Anything you can do — knowing the support is there — we’re so thankful for anything you can do.”
